"Raja! Where are you heading to?" I asked my elder brother

"I will be joining the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)."

"No! Please don't go! Ahpa and ahmah are old and we need you in the house."

I can understand how he felt. The Sri Lankan government were very biased in the way they solved conflicts. It is always the Sinhalese who will be winning in the conflicts because the government are all corrupted and they are all Sinhalese.During the British colonial rule, it wasn't like that at all. Everywhere was peaceful and people were friendly.

Then, the Sinhalese were jealous of us, the Tamils because we excelled in examinations and spoke fluent English. We were given the priorities when it came to jobs. Everything was in English during the British colonial rule.

Everything came crushing down when Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. The new government, which was mainly made up of Sinhalese introduced policies which favoured the Sinhalese instead. When Sri Lanka gained independence, the first policy implemented by the government was citizenship rights. It was also the day when Raja came running home in anger

"I cannot believe what the government had done! They made us stateless! We did so much for the country and yet they made us lose out on educations, jobs, houses and even voting!"

"There's nothing we can do, Raja .Sinhalese are in power and they would obviously help their own race as they make up the majority population too" I exclaimed.

Luckily, Indians came to help us, the stateless Indian Tamils stateless. The Sri Lankan government only allowed a certain percentage of us to return back to India and the rest would be granted the Sri Lankan citizenship.

I could not hold back his unquenchable desire to fight for the race and so, I have to let him go.

Weeks passed, and Raja still isn’t home yet. I’ve been trying my best to keep this secret about Raja joining the LTTE from Ahpa and Ahmah for a very long time, not wanting to worry them. But it’s even harder to keep that secret as each day goes by because they would ask about Raja often, as if it’s their daily routine.

I was beginning to get very worried for him, afraid that something bad might happen. After much consideration, I’ve decided to go down town to look for him, hoping that I would be able to find him there.
True enough, Raja was there. I felt relieved to see him, still looking as healthy as before. I stood at a corner, not wanting to be seen. When I was about to shout for him, a riot broke out. Cold sweat trickled down my spine, sending shivers to all parts of my body. I continued to stay in that corner to witness the riot.

After a few bloody moments, Raja noticed me. He stood at where he was, motionless. With a blink of an eye, he was shot dead. I stood there, aghast at the terrible sight of the accident.I was dumbfound.I stood rooted to the ground and had no idea on what to do next.
